Ibiza Breaks Ground on Long-Awaited Sa Coma Motor Park
Ibiza’s motorsport community celebrated a historic milestone as construction officially began on the Sa Coma Engine Park. Consell de Ibiza President Vicent Marí declared this fulfills “a commitment long demanded by generations of fans, families and athletes linked to the world of motorsport” during the ceremonial first stone laying.
A Decades-Long Pursuit
The January 30th ceremony marked the culmination of over 30 years of advocacy for proper motorsport facilities. Sports Councilor Salvador Llosa presided over the event attended by Sant Antoni Mayor Marcos Serra, project engineers, and motorsport representatives.
«This is not an improvised project» Marí emphasized, detailing how the €5.7 million development addresses «the provisional nature, dispersion and lack of decent facilities» that plagued Ibiza’s motorcycle community. The project overcame significant bureaucratic hurdles including environmental reviews and urban planning challenges.
Symbolic Foundations
Officials sealed a time capsule including:
- Historical documents of facility demands
- Local newspapers from January 30th
- Construction blueprints
- Commemorative coins
- An Ibiza flag carried by athletes
Technical Specifications
Scheduled for completion in September 2026, the Matías Arrom Bibioni SL-built facility features:
- 1,525-meter track with 6-meter width
- 105-meter starting straight
- 2-meter safety corridors
- Garage complex and technical areas
- Spectator amenities including grandstands
Sustainability Focus
Project engineer Javier Ripoll highlighted noise-mitigation designs: «A special barricaded configuration minimizes sound impact on nearby residences». The design complies with Balearic Islands’ strict environmental regulations while enabling future championship events.
Sant Antoni Mayor Marcos Serra envisions the facility potentially hosting «Spanish, European and world championships», projecting significant sports tourism potential for Ibiza’s offseason economy.
Once operational, the Sa Coma Motor Park will serve approximately 300 registered island riders and motorsport enthusiasts, replacing makeshift practice areas with FIM-standard facilities.
