Grand Prix, an incentive to stay active

Overview of Grand Prix 2026
The Grand Prix 2026 is a Balearic competition that focuses less on winning and more on sharing experiences, teamwork, and keeping older adults active. Organized by the Institute of Social Work and Social Services (Intress), the event brought together users from several day‑centers and residences across Menorca and Mallorca for a day of games, questions, and fun.

Who Took Part?

  • Menorcan delegation: Pepe Marquès, Paco Muñoz, Encarna de Rosa, and Joan Vinent from the Center for the Promotion of Personal Autonomy (CPAP) in Ciutadella and the residence in Ferreries.
  • Mallorcan teams: participants from Bunyola, Andratx, and the casal de Can Ribas in Palma.

How the Competition Worked

  1. General‑culture quiz – teams could study the questions beforehand.
  2. Attention/memory test – similar to a memory‑matching game.
  3. Agility and aim challenge – throwing at a target to score points.
The final round took place yesterday in Palma at the Son Xigala centre.

Menorcan Team’s Journey

  • Semi‑final in Menorca (end of May) – the Ciutadella and Ferreries users competed locally and earned a spot in the finals.
  • Travel to Palma – the four representatives moved to Son Xigala, where they joined the other teams for the grand finale.
  • Result – the Menorcan group finished fourth, but the emphasis was on participation rather than placement.

What the Participants Said

Fun and Friendship

  • Joan Vinent: “The experience has been rewarding and fun; we created a real atmosphere of camaraderie and I felt very comfortable.”
  • Encarna de Rosa: “At first I didn’t want to come, but my kids convinced me. I ended up having a great time.”
  • Pepe Marquès: “It was a surprise—very different from what I imagined, but really positive and enjoyable.”

Surprising Benefits

  • Paco Muñoz noted that the CPAP center teaches useful skills, offers good colleagues and supportive teachers.
  • Joan added that the activities “enrich me” and help him feel supported, especially after illness or when getting older.

Why Activities Like This Matter

Boosting Autonomy and Confidence
Montse Parla, Intress coordinator in Menorca, stresses that the project’s social and recuperative value lies in participation and enjoyment. By taking part, older adults demonstrate their desire to stay socially engaged, which strengthens their sense of autonomy.

Family Perspectives
Llorenç Marquès, who accompanied his father to Palma, called the day “fantastic.” He highlighted the jokes, good times, and the fact that staying active is more rewarding than simply staying at home.

Conclusion
The Grand Prix 2026 showed that games, teamwork, and a bit of friendly competition can bring joy, improve confidence, and reinforce the importance of staying active at any age. For the Menorcan users, the trip was less about the final score and more about the shared laughter, new friendships, and the reminder that they remain valuable, engaged members of their community.
