Tragedy Strikes Menorca: Man Dies in Bedroom After Cliff Rock Crashes Down onto Seaside Home
A devastating incident occurred on the island of Menorca, where a man in his mid-60s lost his life after a large boulder came loose from a cliff and fell onto his home. The tragedy took place in the early hours of Tuesday, at 5:27 am, in the Cala Sant Esteve urbanisation in Es Castell.
Emergency services were quickly called to the scene, and upon arrival, firefighters and Guardia Civil officers found the couple, of undisclosed nationality, trapped in their bedroom by rubble for approximately two hours. Unfortunately, the man was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife, 62, was taken to the Mateu Orfila Hospital with serious injuries.
Rescue Efforts and Investigation
The detached rock, measuring five meters in diameter, landed on the building complex consisting of three homes, crossing two floors before finally coming to rest in the bedroom on the ground floor where the couple were. Seven people reside in the building, with one person on the second floor, four on the first floor, and the couple on the ground floor.
A dozen homes in the area affected by the landslide have been evacuated as a precautionary measure. Rescue teams utilized a drone in the operation, which was particularly useful given the hard-to-access locality with poor mobile phone coverage. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the landslide and working with emergency teams to assess the stability of the area and prevent further incidents.
