Atletico Baleares Bolsters Backline with Strategic Signing

Mallorca’s Atlético Baleares has made a significant move in the winter transfer window by securing defender Hugo Anglada on loan from La Liga side Girona FC. This strategic acquisition fills one of the club’s vacant U-23 roster slots in Spain’s competitive Second RFEF division (Group 3), reinforcing manager Luis Blanco’s defensive options as the promotion push intensifies.

Building for Promotion Success

The 21-year-old center back becomes the third winter signing for the Palma-based club, joining right-back Marc Lachèvre and forward Álex Pachón in strengthening the squad. Club director Patrick Messow confirmed to local media that additional reinforcements might arrive before the transfer deadline, stating: “We’re continuously evaluating opportunities to improve our competitive position.”

Blanco’s side currently sits mid-table in the Fourth Division (Group 3) with aspirations climbing the standings. According to RFEF statistics, defensive consistency has been crucial for promotion contenders, making Anglada’s arrival particularly timely given the team’s occasional backline struggles this season.

Profile: Hugo Anglada

The Almudévar-born defender (1.82m) brings valuable experience despite his youth:

  • Former Spanish youth international
  • 14 appearances this season for Barbastro (Second RFEF)
  • Previous loan spell with Talavera CF
  • Product of SD Huesca’s academy system

Anglada’s move comes through his parent club Girona FC, where he signed a long-term contract through 2027 before being loaned to gain competitive experience. His tactical awareness and physical presence address specific needs identified by Blanco’s technical staff following their mid-season evaluation.

Strategic Squad Development

This signing aligns with Atlético Baleares’ dual objectives: immediate promotion contention and long-term talent development. Under RFEF regulations, U-23 players like Anglada provide crucial roster flexibility while maintaining competitive quality.

Club historian Miguel Ángel Nadal notes: “The Balearic Islands have historically produced exceptional defensive talents. Anglada’s profile fits our tradition of developing intelligent defenders who can progress through the pyramid.”

With 14 matches remaining in the league campaign, Atlético Baleares aims to climb from their current 9th position into the promotion playoffs. Anglada’s debut could come as early as February 4th against fellow mid-table side UE Sant Andreu.
