Balearics detect excessive screen use among children under six

New research reveals a pressing digital dilemma in the Balearic Islands, where 9 out of 10 families report excessive screen exposure among children under six. Groundbreaking data from the largest-ever regional study on early childhood digital habits shows urgent need for action.

Alarming Screen Exposure Patterns

Commissioned by the Balearic Islands’ Ministry for Education and Universities and conducted by University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) researchers, the comprehensive study analyzed responses from 8,991 questionnaires collected between April-July 2025. Lead researcher Tomeu Mut of UIB’s Inclusive Schooling and Diversity Research Group (GREID) explains: “Our findings show screen infiltration in critical developmental windows – with 96% of children regularly using TVs and 94.9% accessing mobile phones before age six.”

Daily Digital Intrusion

Data reveals most children begin device interaction before their first birthday, with screens dominating key daily moments:

  • Pre-school routines
  • Meal times
  • Bedtime transitions

Despite 95.8% household internet access, 86.6% of parents admit lacking tools to guide healthy digital habits.

Developmental Consequences

The peer-reviewed study documents measurable impacts from excessive screen time:

  • Language development delays (27% more frequent in high-use children)
  • Attention regulation difficulties observed by 68% of educators
  • Sleep pattern disruption correlating with evening device use

Co-author Sebastià Verger notes: “Using devices as digital pacifiers creates dependency patterns that undermine emotional regulation skills.”

Evidence-Based Solutions

Responding to these findings, the Balearic government will implement:

  • Mobile-free zones in all early childhood facilities
  • Standardized visual signage for device-free areas
  • Professional training programs launching September 2026

Education Minister Anthony Vera emphasizes: “This isn’t about removing technology, but protecting essential developmental windows through collective responsibility.”

A Path Forward

Pediatric experts recommend practical adjustments:

As UIB researchers conclude: “Small changes in adult device habits create measurable improvements in children’s wellbeing.”
