Paulina Buforn Launches Ibiza’s First Handball Training Camp
What the Camp Is About
The Paulina Buforn Association is bringing a special handball training camp to Sant Josep. The goal is to give young Ibicencan players high‑quality coaching and to make the event a yearly fixture on the island’s sports calendar.
When and Where
The camp runs from June 29 to July 3. Sessions will be held at the sa Blanca Dona and Can Guerxo pavilions.
Who’s Leading the Training
International Coaches
- José Ignacio Prades – former head coach of the Spanish women’s national team, with experience worldwide.
- Maria Cadens – physical trainer for the senior Spanish squad, focusing on fitness and defensive tactics.
Guest Stars
- Petar Cikusa – FC Barcelona player and Spanish international.
- Marta López – four‑time Olympian with the Spanish “Guerreras”.
Participants
The organizers aimed for 84 spots but finally welcomed 80 young athletes. This number lets them create small, focused groups for juvenile, infant, and cadet categories, ensuring each player gets personal attention.
Beyond the Court
The program mixes handball drills with:
- A visit to the Sa Caleta interpretation center to explore Phoenician and Punic history.
- Aquatic games, table tennis, and beach‑hand‑style activities.
- Talks and coexistence experiences that build teamwork and cultural awareness.
Coaching Education
Registration is still open for a parallel training cycle. Coaches from handball and other team sports can join in‑person, online, or watch recorded sessions. The focus is on age‑appropriate physical preparation and modern coaching methods.
Why It Matters
Paulina Buforn says the camp comes from gratitude to the island that gave her so much. She wants to fill a gap in Ibiza’s sporting offerings and show that handball has a rich history and a bright future.
Local Support
Xicu Ribas, Sant Josep’s Sports Councillor, and Javier Bonet, Ibiza Council’s island director, both praised the initiative. They note that while football and basketball camps are common, Ibiza now has its own dedicated handball space with long‑term vision.
Conclusion
The first edition of the Paulina Buforn handball camp is set to become a milestone for youth sports on Ibiza. By blending elite coaching, cultural outings, and coach education, the project not only develops athletic skills but also strengthens the island’s sporting community. With strong local backing and international expertise, the camp promises to inspire the next generation of handball talent.
