Cricket Gains Official Sport Status in Balearic Islands After Government Decree
The Balearic Government’s Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports has formally recognized cricket as an official sport across Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza. This landmark decision (Decree 208/2024) follows 14 months of consultation with regional sports authorities and technical verification of cricket’s compliance with the autonomous community’s sporting criteria.
New Opportunities for Growth
This official designation unlocks:
- Access to formal competition frameworks
- Eligibility for public funding grants
- Institutional support from sports governing bodies
Chad Harwood-Jones, founder of Mallorca Meerkats Cricket Club, told EWN: “This recognition provides the foundation to develop proper youth pathways. We’ve seen junior participation double since 2022 – now we can build sustainable structures.”
Solving the Facility Crisis
Mallorca Cricket Club President Ben Vickers emphasized the timing is critical: “Since losing our Santa Ponsa ground in 2015, we’ve operated across 12 temporary locations. This status strengthens our negotiations for a permanent home – crucial for hosting proper competitions.”
Government data shows cricket participation has grown 18% annually since 2019, with 23 active teams across the archipelago.
Honoring History, Building Future
Menorca Cricket Club Chairman Dan Osterbery noted the sport’s deep roots: “Our inter-island tournament celebrated its 40th edition last year. Recognition validates four decades of community building through cricket.”
Immediate next steps include:
- Formalizing youth development programs with school partnerships
- Securing regional sports infrastructure funding
- Expanding the Balearic Cricket League from 8 to 12 teams by 2026

The decision particularly impacts the British expat community that forms 60% of local players. Tourism officials estimate cricket events contribute €850,000 annually to the islands’ economy through visitor spending.
With formal recognition secured, Balearic cricket now qualifies for Spain’s national sports development fund, which allocated €4.2 million to emerging sports in 2023.
