Benidorm Fest 2024 Crowns New Champions!
The Winning Moment
Producer Tony Grox and singer Lucycalys won big at Benidorm Fest 2024! Their song “Te Amaré” earned them the festival’s top prize: a golden mermaid trophy, €150,000, and a special trip to Miami. There, they’ll record new music and promote with TelevisaUnivision. This was the festival’s fifth edition.
Behind the Scenes Buzz
The final had the lowest TV audience in Benidorm Fest history. Still, broadcaster RTVE called it a success and confirmed the festival will return in 2025. Spain skipped Eurovision this year over Israel’s participation, and this decision sparked a brief moment of controversy.
A Silent Statement
During the final gala, singer Nebulossa wore a Palestine flag painted on her chest, supporting RTVE’s Eurovision boycott. RTVE’s Communications Director, María Eizaguirre, defended the move: “Artists have freedom to express themselves. RTVE’s DNA includes Eurovision, and we want to return.”
Winners Sidestep the Drama
Tony and Lucycalys avoided the political conversation. While Tony initially said they “always support RTVE’s decisions,” the duo later shifted focus to music. Lucycalys shared: “We’re happy Benidorm Fest backs Spanish music. I’ve never felt so much support!” Tony added they joined “for the music, not competition,” calling their win unexpected against such “strong artists.”
New Stars on the Rise
For 19-year-old Lucycalys, winning was surreal: “I went from being a Benidorm Fest fan to winning it!” Tony hopes their victory inspires other producers: “This gives colleagues a huge opportunity to step on stage next year.”
Spotify Shoutout
Singer Asha won Spotify’s new prize—a trip to their Stockholm headquarters—for her song “Turista.” The independent artist called it life-changing: “Starting out alone feels impossible. I applied hoping for something nice.” She praised the festival’s “Grammy-level” quality.
Why Benidorm Fest Matters
Despite the ratings dip, Benidorm Fest cemented its role as Spain’s premier music launchpad. It celebrated new talent, sparked conversations, and proved dreams like Lucycalys’—from fan to winner—can come true. With RTVE committed to its future, the festival keeps spotlighting Spanish sounds on a global stage.
