Austrian Grand Prix 2026 – FP1 Recap

Scorching Spielberg

The Red Bull Ring greeted teams with unusually high heat: 32 °C in the air and a blistering 51 °C on the track. The heat made tyre management a hot topic from the very first laps.

Antonelli Takes Charge

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli showed why he’s atop the standings. After a disappointing retirement in Barcelona due to a Mercedes reliability glitch, the 19‑year‑old Italian bounced back with authority. He led both free‑practice sessions, leaving his teammate George Russell more than six‑tenths of a second behind.

McLaren’s Bright Moment

While Antonelli set the pace, McLaren emerged as the closest challengers. Oscar Piastri grabbed P2, just two‑tenths off the leader, and world champion Lando Norris followed in P3, three‑tenths back. The orange cars looked poised to challenge for front‑row spots if they can keep the momentum.

Verstappen’s Troublesome Start

Home favourite Max Verstappen had a rough Friday. His RB22 stalled twice in FP1, forcing him to abort runs. After requesting a seat‑position change in the afternoon, he managed fourth place but trailed the fastest lap by about half a second. The Dutchman hopes the new Red Bull upgrades will close the gap as the weekend progresses.

Ferrari’s Mixed Feelings

Lewis Hamilton, fresh from a Barcelona win, finished a respectable distance behind Antonelli but made several small errors that cost him time. His teammate Charles Leclerc mirrored those mistakes, leaving Maranello with work to do if they want to keep pressure on Mercedes. The SF‑26 shows promise, yet consistency remains a question.

Aston Martin and Williams Lag Behind

Both Aston Martin and Williams arrived in Austria without any fresh upgrades, and it showed. Carlos Sainz struggled to P18, roughly two seconds off the pace, while Fernando Alonso could only manage P19, three‑and‑a‑half seconds back. The only cars ahead of them were their own teammates Lance Stroll and the two Cadillac entries (Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Pérez), all of whom also failed to complete a clean lap.

Cadillac’s Big Update, Little Result

The American Cadillac team made headlines by announcing a massive upgrade package—new floor, diffuser, sidepods, engine cover and up to ten components in total. Despite the ambitious effort, both cars stopped running: one stalled twice, the other ended in flames in the garage. The update has yet to deliver any performance gain.

Looking Ahead

FP1 set the stage for an intriguing battle. Antonelli looks ready to extend his winning streak, McLaren lurks close behind, and Verstappen will be eager to turn his fortunes around with the new Red Bull bits. Ferrari needs to tidy up its driving, while Aston Martin, Williams and Cadillac face an uphill fight to find speed. The rest of the weekend will tell whether the early trends hold or if surprises await.
