The Beach Discovery
Picture a young flamingo, tired and struggling, washed up on the sunny shores of Son Saura beach in Menorca. That’s exactly what happened back in August 2014 during peak tourist season. This wasn’t your typical pink flamingo – its feathers were still gray, and experts from Menorca’s environmental group GOB figured it got separated from its flock during migration. Without help, this bird’s story might have ended there.
Emergency Care at the Wildlife Center
GOB’s rescue team swung into action, transporting the exhausted flamingo to their Wildlife Center. For a whole month, caretakers nursed it back to health, helping it regain strength after its dangerous detour. This wasn’t just about recovery – it was prep for a return to the wild.
The Big Release
The big moment came when the flamingo was strong enough for freedom. At Ses Salines de la Concepció wetlands, with help from local sculptor Maties Quetglas’ family (who captured it on video!), the bird soared back into its natural habitat. Before flying off, it got something special: a leg ring allowing scientists to track it without recapturing it.

Years after its rescue, it reappeared – not in Spain, but over 500 kilometers away in Southern France! Spotted in 2022 and again in January 2026 near the Rhône River delta (perfect flamingo territory!), it stunned conservationists. Now sporting vibrant pink “rose-colored” plumage, it’s become a local celebrity on France’s coast.
