Howzat! Cricket formally recognised as an official sport in the Balearics

Cricket Gains Official Recognition in the Balearic Islands

Cricket has been formally recognised as an official sport in the Balearic Islands, following a resolution issued by the Balearic Government’s Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports. This decision marks a significant milestone for the sport across Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza, and is the result of over a year of work and consultation with the Balearic sports authorities.

The recognition confirms that cricket meets all legal, technical, and participation requirements to be recognised as an official sporting discipline within the autonomous community. This development unlocks access to institutional support, public funding pathways, formal competition structures, and long-term development opportunities for cricket across the islands.

A New Era for Cricket in the Balearics

Chad Harwood-Jones, founder of the Mallorca Meerkats Cricket Club, expressed his enthusiasm for the recognition, stating that it gives cricket a future in the region. With over 60 children having already come through the club, and participation continuing to grow, Harwood-Jones believes that this recognition will enable the club to build proper pathways for young players and work more closely with local institutions.

Ben Vickers, President of Mallorca Cricket Club, also welcomed the news, highlighting the club’s commitment to establishing a permanent ground. The recognition is seen as a major step forward in this journey, strengthening the club’s position as it works towards finding a long-term home for cricket in Mallorca.

A Long-Awaited Achievement

Dan Osterbery, Chairman of Menorca Cricket Club, noted that cricket has been played in the Balearics for over 40 years, with Menorca having welcomed teams from around the world. Osterbery believes that the official recognition of cricket is a testament to the teams, volunteers, and players who have kept the sport alive across the islands for decades.

With official recognition now secured, clubs across the Balearics will continue discussions with local authorities around facilities, youth development, community programmes, and inter-island competition. This development is expected to have a positive impact on the growth and development of cricket in the region.
