New EU visa-free travel scheme for Britons has been kicked into the long grass

Current Status (October 2026)

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is still not running. The EU’s official page says the system is “not in operation” and that no applications are being accepted. As of 19 October 2026, no launch date has been announced.

Why the Hold‑Up?

Technical Glitches with the Entry/Exit System

ETIAS was supposed to work together with the Entry/Exit System (EES), which went live in April 2026. EES records fingerprints and facial scans at borders, but many airports are still seeing long queues—up to five hours—because of bugs in the EES software.

EU’s Cautious Approach

Because the EES problems could affect ETIAS, the European Commission decided to wait until the border‑check system is stable. They want to avoid launching a travel‑authorisation tool that would be useless if travelers are stuck in lines.

What This Means for Travelers

If you are from a visa‑free country (like the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, etc.), you do not need to apply for ETIAS right now. Any website asking you to pay for an ETIAS today is not official.

You can still travel to the Schengen area without extra paperwork or fees, just as you could before.

When Might ETIAS Actually Start?

EU officials hint that the launch could move to spring 2027 or even the final quarter of 2027. They promise to give travelers several months’ notice before the system goes live.

Bottom Line: What Should You Do?

For now, relax and keep an eye on official EU travel updates. No action is required, and you won’t miss anything by waiting for the official announcement.

Conclusion

The ETIAS rollout has been postponed again, mainly because the companion Entry/Exit System is still experiencing serious delays at airports. Until those issues are fixed, the EU will not start collecting ETIAS applications. Travelers from visa‑free nations can continue to visit Europe as usual, but they should stay informed for any future changes.
