New minimums for Mercadal and Da Silva for the Balearic Summer Swimming Championships

Maó Swimming Club Shines in June

June kicked off with a splash for the Maó Swimming Club. Two athletes have just cleared the qualifying times needed to compete in the Balearic Summer Swimming Championships, set for July 4‑5 at the Son Hugo pool in Palma de Mallorca.

Who’s Going to the Balearic Summer Championships?

The club will send a team of six swimmers to Palma:

  • David Simonet – senior category
  • Marc Gómez – junior category
  • Gorka Abad – children’s category
  • Gonzalo Barreno – children’s category
  • Amaia Mercadal – children’s category
  • Alejandra Da Silva – children’s category

Spotlight on the Swimmers

Amaia Mercadal’s Breakthrough

Amaia, born in 2012, finally nailed the required times in both the 100 m and 200 m freestyle. After falling short by just a few tenths last year, she now has her ticket to Mallorca secured.

Alejandra Da Silva’s New Record

Also a 2012 junior, Alejandra pushed her personal best further, posting a new minimum in the 200 m freestyle and earning her spot at the championships.

Gonzalo Barreno and Gorka Abad’s Improvements

Gonzalo shaved off valuable seconds in the 100 m breaststroke, while Gorka dropped his time in the 50 m freestyle, both making the qualifying cuts much more comfortably.

Facing the Olympic‑Size Pool Challenge

All six swimmers will face a double test: competing in a championship event and racing in a 50‑meter Olympic pool—a facility that Menorca lacks. Not being able to train regularly in a long‑course pool adds an extra layer of difficulty, but the team is ready to rise to the occasion.

Looking Ahead to Nationals

With these achievements under their belts, the Maó Swimming Club is already eyeing the next goal: possible national‑record qualifying times. The momentum from June could propel several members onto the national stage later this season.

Conclusion

The Maó Swimming Club’s June performance shows hard work paying off. Six swimmers have earned their places at the Balearic Summer Championships, and they’ll tackle the challenge of an Olympic‑size pool with determination. Their sights are now set on higher targets, promising an exciting finish to the season.
