Menorca Joins the Incesa de Torres, Talaies, and Talaiots for Human Rights
Menorca will once again participate in the Incesa de Torres, Talaies, and Talaiots for Human Rights on January 31, but this year, only municipalities governed by the left will take part in the event.
The event, which aims to visualize the collective commitment to the defense of human rights, dignity of all people, and values of welcoming migrants, will be held in three urban areas of Maó, Ciutadella, and Es Mercadal, rather than in archaeological sites as was done until 2024. This change in location is intended to facilitate citizen participation.
Coordination and Participation
The initiative will be coordinated by the Menorcan Cooperation Fund, following the Council’s withdrawal from the event last year. The town councils of Ciutadella, Es Mercadal, and Maó will be the only participants, with neither Alaior nor Ferreries, municipalities governed by the PP, hosting the event as they did last year.
There will be three ignition points: at 1 p.m. at the Castle of Sant Antoni de Fornells and at the Pont de Sant Roc de Maó, and at 6:30 p.m. at the Castle of Sant Nicolau de Ciutadella. In addition to the lighting of smoke and light flares, a short manifesto will be read at each point.
Origins and Purpose
The burning of towers, watchtowers, and talayots for human rights is an initiative promoted from Mallorca, which was born in 2016 by a group of teachers from the Institute of Secondary Education Marratxí and the Balearic Society of Mathematics SBM-XEIX. The action aims to visualize the collective commitment to the defense of human rights, dignity of all people, and values of welcoming migrants.
In Mallorca alone, more than 80 points are expected to be added, demonstrating the widespread support for this initiative. For more information, visit Here
