Survey Reveals Strong Spanish Support For EU Action Against Elon Musk’s X
A recent YouGov survey commissioned by international coalition People vs Big Tech reveals 50% of Spaniards support prohibiting X (formerly Twitter) in the European Union. This positions Spain as the EU nation most strongly favoring sanctions against Elon Musk’s social media platform, which continues violating Digital Services Act (DSA) regulations on privacy and transparency.
The comprehensive poll of 1,000 Spanish respondents found 78% demand “additional measures” against X if ongoing legal violations aren’t corrected. This follows the European Commission’s €120 million fine against X on December 4, 2026, for platform design practices deemed misleading and lacking transparency under DSA requirements.
Political Divide in Spanish Sentiment
Support for sanctions shows significant variance across Spain’s political spectrum:
- Sumar voters: 93% support action
- PSOE voters: 87% approval
- PP voters: 53% endorsement
- Vox voters: 53% agreement
Across other political affiliations, 81% />support sanctions. The findings highlight how Spain’s position exceeds EU averages, where 47% favor prohibition across Germany, France, Italy and Poland.

European Resistance Patterns
Nation-level polling reveals intriguing trends:
- 70% of Europeans overall demand stronger measures against X
- Far-right voters consistently show lower support for sanctions
- Germany’s AfD voters: 41% oppose actions against X
- Emmanuel Macron’s supporters show significantly higher endorsement than Marine Le Pen’s voters in France
“Europeans are tired of empty warnings. X has been sanctioned, investigated and has had every opportunity to comply with the law, but has chosen to laugh in the face of the EU,” stated Ava Lee, executive director of People vs Big Tech.
Privacy Prioritized Over Transatlantic Relations
When weighing digital protections against international diplomacy:
- 64% of Spaniards prioritize privacy/security over relations with the USA
- 70% of Germans favor digital protections
- 73% of French respondents prioritize privacy safeguards
These findings emerge amidst ongoing European Commission investigations into X’s handling of illegal content, disinformation, and data practices under the landmark DSA legislation implemented in 2023. Experts suggest Musk’s public disputes with EU regulators and platform policy shifts toward looser content moderation contribute to European skepticism.
