What British travellers need to know for Spain this summer
Proof of residence
If you live in Spain, you don’t need a passport stamp. Just show your TIE (foreigner’s ID) together with your passport.
Documents you might be asked for at the border
- Return or onward ticket
- Travel insurance proof
- Enough money for your stay (amount depends on where you sleep)
- Hotel booking or proof you own the place
- If staying with friends/family: a letter of invitation or proof of their address
Passport rules
Spain is part of the Schengen area, so:
- Passport issue date must be less than 10 years before you arrive.
- Passport must be valid for at least 3 months after you plan to leave the Schengen zone.
If your passport was renewed before 1 Oct 2018, check the issue date – it might be too old.
Dual nationals
When you come back to the UK you must use a valid British passport (or certificate of entitlement).
Visa‑free stay
British citizens can visit Spain and other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180‑day period without a visa, for tourism, family visits, business, short study or training.
New Entry/Exit System (EES)
The EU is rolling out an automated system that replaces passport stamps.
- On arrival you may have to give fingerprints and a photo at a booth before immigration.
- On departure you might need to give fingerprints or a photo again.
- Kids 11 or younger only need a photo, no fingerprints.
- There is no fee, but it adds a few extra minutes, so allow extra time at the border.
What to do before you travel
- Check your passport’s issue and expiry dates.
- Renew if needed.
- Print or have digital copies of your ticket, insurance, money proof, accommodation proof.
- If staying with friends/family, get a simple invitation letter from them.
Conclusion
Traveling to Spain this summer is still straightforward for British visitors, but you need to be ready with the right documents and a little extra patience for the new biometric checks. Keep your passport up to date, carry proof of where you’ll stay and how you’ll pay, and enjoy your holiday!
