Flu Incidence on the Rise in the Balearic Islands: Latest Updates and Recommendations

The Balearic Islands are experiencing a surge in flu cases, with the incidence rate continuing to rise, although the archipelago remains in a low-intensity epidemic phase, according to data from week 51 of the year (December 15-21). During this period, 88.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants were recorded, representing a significant increase from the previous week’s 75 cases.

The incidence of flu varies across the different islands, with Mallorca reporting 90.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Ibiza with 87.7 cases, Minorca with 78.3 cases, and Formentera with 51.8 cases. Despite these differences, all islands remain within the same epidemiological scenario, with varying levels of viral circulation intensity.

Island-Specific Incidence Rates and Recommendations

A closer look at the incidence rates on each island reveals that while Mallorca has the highest rate, Ibiza and Minorca are not far behind. Formentera, on the other hand, has the lowest incidence rate. The Balearic Islands’ health authorities remain vigilant, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures to curb the spread of the flu virus.

The Regional Ministry of Health (Conselleria de Salut) recommends the use of face masks by individuals with respiratory symptoms, as well as in vulnerable settings or high-traffic areas, to reduce transmission. These measures are part of Scenario I of the recommendations protocol for the control of infectious diseases, developed by the Ministry of Health and the autonomous communities’ public health representatives.

Flu Vaccination and Contingency Planning

The Regional Ministry of Health stresses the importance of flu vaccination during this epidemic period, aiming to achieve high coverage in the shortest possible time. Additionally, the Health Service (Servei de Salut) has activated a contingency plan to address the increased demand for healthcare services, including the activation of up to 215 hospital beds.

Measures already implemented include the activation of 25 beds in non-profit partner centers, such as Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Palma and Inca, as well as the opening of 8 beds at Son Espases University Hospital. Furthermore, 24 beds were enabled on December 9 at the H1D unit at Son Llàtzer University Hospital, and staff reinforcements have been added, including 11 nurses and 7 nursing assistants (HCAs).
