Bar Pesquero’s Futuristic Transformation: German Architects Redesign Palma’s Iconic Waterfront Spot
Nautical Inspiration for a Mallorcan Landmark
Palma de Mallorca’s iconic Bar Pesquero waterfront restaurant is undergoing a striking transformation under the guidance of German architects Jordi Herrero and Eduardo García Acuña. As reported by Ultima Hora, the redesign draws inspiration from Palma’s maritime heritage, specifically the historic shipyards that once dominated the port area. The architects emphasize their design evokes “the aesthetics of old quayside shipyards where ship hulls under construction defined the landscape.”
Signature Pergola Anchors the Design
The project’s centerpiece is a massive slatted pergola resembling the structural framework of ships, which will canopy the entire building along Palma’s bustling harbor promenade. This innovative solution serves multiple purposes:
- Provides essential sun protection for the spacious terraces
- Reduces noise pollution from passing vehicles
- Frames strategic views of the adjacent fish auction hall and Palma Cathedral
“Sun protection elements fundamentally shape Mediterranean architecture,” the architects explain. “Whether through pergolas, awnings or parasols, they become integral to a space’s identity.”
Materials Mirror Maritime Heritage
The architects incorporated materials and textures directly referencing Palma’s fishing traditions:
- Laminated wood construction mimicking ship hulls in dry dock
- Marble-strip flooring arranged in geometric patterns
- Strategic greenery and textile elements inspired by fishing nets
Glass walls beneath the pergola create transparency while maintaining weather protection, resulting in what the designers describe as “a lightweight structure that engages with its maritime context.”
Nighttime Transformation
As daylight fades, the pergola undergoes a dramatic metamorphosis. Carefully calibrated architectural lighting converts the structure into a luminous sculpture visible from both land and sea. “The illuminated pergola creates an iconic counterpoint to the medieval La Lonja building across the harbor,” note the architects. “We achieved this landmark effect without light pollution through precisely directed fixtures.”

Substantial Investment in Palma’s Future
The Balearic Port Authority awarded the 16-year concession to Coliving Puig d’Alaró after rigorous evaluation of technical, economic, and quality proposals. The new operators will invest €2.9 million in renovations including:
- Expansion and modernization of kitchen facilities
- Enhanced accessibility features
- Integration of sustainable building systems
This significant investment underscores confidence in Palma’s continued appeal as a Mediterranean destination while respecting the port area’s historical significance. The redesigned Bar Pesquero is scheduled to reopen in late 2026, offering both residents and visitors a fresh perspective on Mallorca’s maritime culture.
