Red Alert Issued for Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca
The Balearic government has raised the weather warning to its highest level after a night of heavy rain caused flooding and damage across the islands. Schools, day centres and many public services will stay closed on Monday.
Why the Alert Was Raised
Forecasters predict up to 50 mm of rain per hour in Ibiza and Formentera, with totals possibly reaching 160 mm over 12 hours. The ground is already soaked from Sunday’s downpour, so more rain could lead to new floods.
What Happened So Far
- Formentera: 123 mm of rain in 24 hours, including a staggering 97.1 mm in one hour.
- Ibiza Airport: 121 mm recorded.
- Sant Joan de Labritja: 84 mm.
The intense rain flooded roads, businesses and even part of the operating theatre at Formentera Hospital.
School and Service Closures
All educational centres on Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca will be closed Monday. Day centres and occupational centres for people with disabilities or those needing care will also shut down.
Emergency Response in Action
The Military Emergency Unit (UME) has been sent from mainland Spain to help with rescue and cleanup. Additional teams, pumps and equipment are being deployed to Formentera.
Local Authorities Activate Plans
Four Ibiza municipalities—Ibiza Town, Sant Antoni de Portmany, Sant Josep de sa Talaia and Santa Eulària des Riu—have turned on their emergency plans. Formentera has done the same. In Mallorca, Llucmajor, Andratx, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar and Porreres have activated their protocols, plus measures in Palma.
Safety Tips for Residents and Visitors
Even if the rain eases for a moment, officials warn that the storm is not over. People should:
- Avoid unnecessary travel, especially at night or early morning.
- Never walk or drive through flooded areas or torrents.
- Stay away from basements, garages and low‑lying spots where water can gather.
- If water enters a building, move to upper floors and wait for help.
- Call 112 in any emergency.
Conclusion
The Balearic Islands are facing a serious weather event with heavy rain, flooding and widespread disruptions. Authorities have issued the highest alert, closed schools and essential services, and mobilised military and local emergency teams. By staying informed, following safety advice and avoiding risky areas, everyone can help keep themselves and their communities safe until the storm passes.
