May 2026: A Tough Month for PlayStation and Xbox
Last May, the two biggest console brands in the United States saw their weakest sales figures in years. According to data from Circana, a U.S. market‑analysis firm, PlayStation recorded its lowest May sales since the year 2000, while Xbox posted its worst May performance ever since the brand first launched.
Why PlayStation Sales Dropped
The main factor behind PlayStation’s slump appears to be the price increase that Sony put into effect in April. In the U.S., the standard PS5 became $100 more expensive, and the PS5 Pro jumped up by $150. In Europe, Sony raised the recommended price of the PS5 Digital Edition to €499.99, left the disc‑driven model unchanged, and lowered the external disc reader to €79.99.
These higher prices made the consoles less attractive to budget‑conscious buyers, and the impact showed up clearly in May’s numbers: PS5 unit sales fell by 58 % compared with May 2025.
Xbox’s Numbers
Xbox also felt the pinch, but its decline was smaller. Series X/S sales dropped by 12 % year‑over‑year. Because Xbox’s baseline sales were already lower than PlayStation’s, this drop did not create a new all‑time low for the brand in May.
Microsoft had already raised Xbox prices in 2025 and announced another global increase set for August 1, 2026, so the April‑May price moves did not directly affect the May results.
Nintendo’s Bright Spot
While Sony and Microsoft struggled, Nintendo enjoyed a strong month. The Switch 2 became the best‑selling console in the United States for May, both in units sold and in revenue generated.
Switch 2’s Record‑Breaking Run
Circana reported that hardware spending during May reached $249 million, which is 38 % higher than the same period the previous year. Although part of that increase comes from higher product prices, the bulk of the growth came from Switch 2 sales.
The console’s performance pushed its cumulative U.S. sales past the 5.9 million‑unit mark achieved in its first year on the market. That places Switch 2 as the second‑fastest‑selling console in the country since sales tracking began in 1995—only Nintendo’s own Game Boy Advance still holds the top spot.
What the Price Hikes Mean
For teens who are saving allowance or part‑time job money, the price jumps on PlayStation and Xbox may make those consoles feel out of reach for now. Nintendo’s decision to keep the Switch 2 competitively priced, combined with its strong lineup of games, has clearly resonated with younger gamers looking for value.
Looking Ahead
If Sony and Microsoft want to regain momentum, they may need to reconsider pricing strategies or bundle offers that appeal to cost‑sensitive audiences. Nintendo, meanwhile, seems to have hit a sweet spot with the Switch 2, and its success could influence how the next generation of consoles is positioned in the market.
