Dragonfly Evenings at Can Prunera Museum
Who’s Playing?
On Saturday, June 13th, two talented musicians will meet in the sculpture garden of the Can Prunera Art Nouveau Museum in Sóller, Mallorca. Pianist Magí Garcías and violinist Aitor Hevia first crossed paths as student and teacher. Twelve years later they are now colleagues sharing the stage.
About the Musicians
Aitor Hevia
Hevia leads the Cuarteto Quiroga, a string quartet that won Spain’s National Prize for Music in 2018. He is known for turning every note into something that feels like poetry.
Magí Garcías
Garcías works as a piano accompanist at the Bern University of the Arts. He calls the string quartet “the most representative formation of chamber music” and praises Hevia’s deep knowledge and expressive playing.
What Will They Play?
The duo will perform works by three Romantic composers:
- Robert Schumann
- Clara Schumann
- Johannes Brahms
These pieces highlight the emotional ties and artistic influence that bound the three composers together.
A Look at the Composer Relationships
Schumann, Brahms, and Clara
In his later years, Robert Schumann struggled with mental health issues, hearing voices and experiencing deep despair. During this difficult time, the young Johannes Brahms offered emotional support to Schumann’s family. Schumann once wrote that Brahms would carry a “holy fire” that would illuminate new music. Brahms repaid that faith with lifelong loyalty. Although the exact nature of Brahms’s bond with Clara Schumann remains private—many letters were destroyed—Garcías notes that their story is far richer than a simple love triangle; it is a tragic chapter reflected in the music they created.
The Dragonfly Evening Series
What Are the Nits de la Libèl·lula?
The concert is part of the “Nits de la Libèl·lula” (Dragonfly evenings) series, now in its second year. The name comes from a dragonfly motif etched into the museum’s garden windows, which also serves as the museum’s logo.
Upcoming Events
- July 18th – Mon Joan Tiquat blends theater, jazz, protest songs, improvisation, and contemporary music.
- End of August – Joan Miquel Oliver, front‑man of the indie pop band Antònia Font, brings his Catalan‑language voice to the stage.
- October 24th – Santiago Auserón fuses Mediterranean sounds with Greek rebetiko in his project Nerantzi.
The Venue: Sculpture Garden of Can Prunera
Garcías describes the garden as a “perfect place to make art” and says there are few spots as beautiful. The surrounding Art Nouveau building, erected between 1904 and 1911, is a key example of Catalan modernism on Mallorca. Inside, visitors can see works by Miró, Picasso, Matisse, Gauguin, and Barceló.
For Garcías, the museum is more than a venue—it’s a personal anchor on the island where he shares his passion with friends and fellow artists.
