Carlos Jacanamijoy was born in Santiago, Putumayo, in the Andean‑Amazon region of southwestern Colombia. He is the son of Don Antonio Jacanamijoy, a respected taita (spiritual leader) of the Inga people from the Sibundoy Valley. Growing up, he absorbed oral traditions, healing rituals, and a deep knowledge of the forest that continues to shape his art.

Moving to Bogotá for formal art studies did not cut him off from his roots. Instead, he used academic techniques to reinterpret Inga wisdom in a contemporary visual language, avoiding mere folklore or ethnographic clichés.
