How Spaniards Feel About Their Looks

Overall Satisfaction Is Rising

According to the latest Aegon Health and Lifestyle Study, 81.6 % of Spaniards say they are happy with their physical appearance. That’s a noticeable jump from the 73.4 % recorded just two years ago, showing a steady upward trend in how people view their own bodies.

Who Feels Best? Age Makes a Difference

Older Adults Lead the Pack

People aged 56‑65 report the highest satisfaction, closely followed by those over 65. With more life experience and often better health, these groups tend to feel comfortable in their skin.

Teens and Young Adults Are the Toughest Critics

The 18‑25 age group shows the lowest level of contentment at 79.1 %. While still a majority, this reflects the pressure many young people feel from social media, school, and early career challenges.

Gender Gaps Appear

Men report higher satisfaction (84.2 %) than women (79.1 %). Studies suggest women often face stricter beauty standards, which can affect how they judge their own looks.

Life Circumstances Shape Self‑Image

Family Life

Having children correlates with a more positive self‑view: 83.6 % of parents feel satisfied, compared to 78 % of those without kids.

Health Perception

When people rate their health between 7 and 10 out of 10, nine out of ten also feel good about their appearance. Physical well‑being seems to boost confidence in looks.

Economic Situation

Those who say their finances improved in the past year show the highest satisfaction (86.6 %). In contrast, only 71.8 % of people whose economic situation worsened feel happy with their bodies.

Job Status

Being employed is linked to a better self‑assessment, with 84.1 % of workers expressing satisfaction, versus lower numbers among the unemployed or inactive.

Regional Variations

Where Satisfaction Is Highest

Navarra tops the list at 90 %, followed by La Rioja (89.5 %), Aragón (88.3 %), Asturias (87.9 %), and Cantabria (87.5 %).

Where Satisfaction Is Lowest

Galicia records the lowest level, with only 73.6 % of residents feeling satisfied with their physique.

What This Means for Teens

If you’re a teenager, you’re not alone in feeling self‑critical—many of your peers share that sentiment. However, the data also shows that satisfaction tends to grow with age, better health, stable finances, and having a job or supportive family environment. Focusing on overall well‑being rather than just appearance can help improve how you feel about yourself over time.

Conclusion

The perception Spaniards have of their own image is improving overall, driven by health, economic stability, and work status. Yet gaps remain: younger people, women, and those living in regions like Galicia report lower satisfaction. Understanding these patterns can guide efforts to promote healthier body image attitudes, especially among teens who are navigating the formative years of self‑identity.
