Two works from Mallorca, awarded at the 2026 Architecture Awards

2026 Architecture Awards: Spotlight on Mallorca’s Winning Projects

What the Awards Celebrate

The 2026 Architecture Awards, organized by the Superior Council of the Colleges of Architects of Spain (CSCAE) and sponsored by COMPAC®, honor designs that blend respect for history with sustainable innovation. This year’s gala, held at Madrid’s Alcázar Theater, highlighted how architecture can tackle climate change, affordable housing, social cohesion, and heritage preservation.

Mallorca’s Two Winners

Sustainability and Health Award – Playa de Palma Regeneration Plan

  • Team: Victoria Fiol Duran – LANDLAB (with Miriam García García and Jordi Miró Rábago)
  • What it is: A strategic plan to renew Palma Beach, a mature tourist area facing climate pressure and biodiversity loss.
  • Key ideas:
    • Naturalizing streets and parks using nature‑based solutions.
    • Installing sustainable urban drainage systems and adaptive re‑vegetation.
    • Creating a green‑blue infrastructure that manages energy, mobility, water, materials, and waste.
  • Why it won: The plan links sustainability and health by turning overlooked spaces—abandoned lots, floodable zones, and marine margins—into a network that improves resilience, natural resources, and residents’ well‑being.

Profession Award – House in Colònia de Sant Pere

  • Team: TEd’A arquitectes
  • What it is: A private holiday home built primarily from local “marés” stone.
  • Key ideas:
    • Puts the inhabitant’s comfort at the center, offering diverse spaces for eating, celebrating, resting, and simply being.
    • Balances the building with its territory, using the stone to root the house in the landscape and local identity.
    • Commits to natural, material, and social resources, cutting fossil‑energy use and CO₂ emissions.
  • Jury note: The architects built almost entirely with stone, allowing light to filter through cracks and vaults, creating a quiet, almost liturgical atmosphere that invites the dweller to complete the space.

Other Highlights from the Gala

  • Gold Medal for Architecture: Awarded to José Ignacio Linazasoro for his lifelong contribution to the field.
  • Lluís Comerón Graupera Architect Award: Recognized the collective effort of collegiate institutions.
  • Attendance: Over 500 guests, including the 25 finalist teams, with a live stream on the CSCAE YouTube channel.
  • Host: Journalist Marta Garcia, with a special performance by Cesar Lucendo as “the walker.”

Words from the Leaders

  • Marta Vall‑llossera (CSCAE President): Emphasized that good architecture should accompany daily life, make it friendlier, and build community. She called for more affordable housing, rehabilitation of existing stock, and neighborhood regeneration—stressing that each building must respect its urban, social, and cultural context.
  • Paco Sanchis (COMPAC® CEO): Praised winners for choosing the “necessary” path of exploration, rigor, and openness, noting that value lies not only in the final result but in the journey that makes it possible.

Why This Matters for Teens

These award‑winning projects show how architecture can be both creative and responsible. By using local materials, embracing nature, and focusing on people’s needs, designers are shaping spaces that are healthier, more resilient, and deeply connected to their communities—exactly the kind of thinking that will shape the cities of tomorrow.

Conclusion

The 2026 Architecture Awards highlighted that excellence in building goes beyond aesthetics. Mallorca’s Playa de Palma regeneration plan and the stone house in Colònia de Sant Pere demonstrate how thoughtful design can address environmental challenges, enhance quality of life, and honor local culture. As young people look toward future careers in design, engineering, or urban planning, these examples offer a inspiring blueprint: create with purpose, respect the past, and innovate for a sustainable future.
